I don't know why this teapot reminds me of Alladin's lamp but it certainly does.

Everything is trashed! The house is trashed, my studio is trashed and even a part of the backyard is trashed getting ready for the festival this weekend. Will it all come together? We'll see...

Flash back to last years festival with Meg helping out. Gone are the red curtains, tulip banner and golden backboards.

If you think you can make it to the festival my advice is to come Sunday morning. You also might consider driving up by Anacortes and down the island instead of taking the ferry. If you decide to take the ferry you can keep an eye on wait times via their website. Here is a link to their webcams.

The girls and I will be located near Toby's Tavern in site 197. I'm pretty excited. I have a spot on the water side of the street. You should be able to see Penn Cove right through my booth! Click here for a map to the festival.

This piece was painted quite awhile ago. It had an issue that took awhile for me to fix. Then it took awhile to get it photographed. Lastly, it took awhile to get it posted. So here we have, very late but not lost, lemon slices in a sugar bowl.

So I had this wonderful idea a while ago of painting a still life in two different lighting conditions. This is as far as I've gotten. I've been having so much fun painting during the day that the night scenes just aren't happening.

On a separate but very exciting note, my dear friend Holly has opened her own art studio in quaint downtown Snohomish. She is allowing me to teach oil painting classes there. So starting May 6th I will be teaching a morning and evening class on Wednesdays. How exciting is that? I've learned so much from the great teachers I've studied with and my daily painting practice. I can't wait to share it all! I'll be posting more about the classes in the next few days.

On one of my special trips to Trader Joes I discovered Meyer lemons. I'd heard about this special fruit but hadn't actually seen them and, oh my, what a lovely color they are.

Amy Scattergood, a Los Angeles Times staff writer, had this to say about the Meyer lemon, "If Cézanne had lived not in France but in Southern California, his still lifes would have overflowed with Meyer lemons. Plump, smooth-skinned, colored an unmistakable dark yellow -- canary yellow, the color of egg yolks or the sun at noon -- they're sweeter than other lemons, with an intoxicating aroma that has hints of honey and thyme."

Yes, that about sums it up.

 

By the way, can you believe this is my 600th post? I certainly can't!

My husband replaced some boards on our twenty plus year old fence the other day. It occurred to me that those nicely aged pieces of wood might make an interesting surface to set up still lifes on. It didn't take too much arm twisting to convince him to let me keep a few. When I found them stacked next to the recycle bin I thought he had forgotten my request. A little disappointed, I grab a few and took them inside only to find a couple hours later several pieces he had neatly stacked in the studio/shed.

After pears, and perhaps apples, grapes and mandarin oranges, lemons have to be the most popular fruit subject for still lifes. It's hard to pass up their sunny color and pleasant roundness.

Okay! My first attempt at a regular still life outside of the workshop using some of the ideas I learned. I have to mention that teapot and I are no longer friends. I painted it, and repainted it, and repainted it, and repainted it. Then I gave up. :( Moving on....

My second painting from the PAWA paint-out.

I've been working hard all day getting ready for a display

of my artwork in the Snohomish Library. This is the third year I've shown

paintings at the library. My daily paintings and plein air

work are too small for the interior walls so they will be put in

a large display case in the entry way.

Well, I'm off to finish putting things together. I'll post a photo of the display tomorrow.
