The Return of Big Red

The Bailey Pumpkin Patch has to be my all time favorite place to paint this time of year. I just can't get enough of painting this super cool, old, red truck covered in pumpkins.

No. 750 Baily's White Truck - Plein Air

Baily's White Truck - Plein Air
Oil on Linen Panel
5" x 7"

It was a very fortunate thing that we got outside to paint in September because October has been a VERY soggy affair. I only had the opportunity to paint in a pumpkin patch twice this year. How disappointing!

No. 749 Bailey's U-Pick - Plein Air

Bailey's U-Pick - Plein Air
Oil on Gessobord
6" x 6"

When the weather is fine my wonderful students let me drag them into the field to paint - literally. We were painting in a field. :) I enjoyed the view so much I stayed after class to paint it myself. Thank you to the Bailey family for always being so gracious about us painting on their farm. Also, a huge thank you to my students for taking on the plein air challenge.

Here's a little video of our experience:

No. 744 Schack Pumpkins

Schack Pumpkins
Oil on Cradled Wooden Panel
12" x 12"

Last week, I went to the Schack Art Center in downtown Everett for an arty party. The goal was to create paintings for an auction to raise money for children's art programs. Jennifer provided these glass pumpkins as a subject to paint. The Schack has a hot shop, a place to blow glass, and they are known for their glass pumpkins. Schack-tober Fest starts next week, complete with a pumpkin patch in the gallery containing over 700 glass pumpkins! Can't wait to see that!

No. 672 Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving!
Oil on Linen Panel
5" x 7"

Wow! I have so much to be thankful for I don't even know where to start. A wonderful family, a comfortable home and a beautiful place to live are my foundation. Then there are three years of daily painting and all the blessings that has brought - a growing business, new friends, recognition and last but not least an opportunity to teach a wonderful group of students. Oh my, I think I'm going to have to find some tissues!
Oh no, I won't forget about you! I'm so very thankful that you take the time out of your busy day to read my humble blog. It means the world to me! Thank you.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!

This is an amazingly peaceful place to hang out - during the week. A slight breeze, migrating geese flying overhead, house sparrows chirping in the barn and the occasional family strolling by looking for the perfect pumpkin all make this a wonderful place to paint.

I went a little bonkers the other day. I stopped at a farmers market on Marsh Road just outside of Snohomish and discovered U-pick flowers were only 20 cents a stem. What a deal! Many flowers came home with me...

The First of Many
Oil on Linen Panel

Ahhh yes, it's that time of year. We've been painting pumpkins in class and I've been painting them at home. They are not easy to paint. It's all those ridges. I love pumpkins but curse the ridges!

Slightly frustrated,
Susan

Chinese lanterns are the coolest thing ever. I spotted a large clump of them growing along a fence near our cabin on Mt. Baker. So I made a point of stopping at a local nursery to see if I could get my very own clump. What I found was a small plant in a decorative pot. Between the time I set the plant in my cart and I the time got to the register I had no less than three nursery workers stop and tell me how invasive they are. How sad. I guess it's just one little plant in a pot for me.

Chinese Lanterns - fabulous color and shape. What more could you ask for?

Chinese Lanterns growing along a fence. They look harmless enough...
