That title just sucks all the classy out of this painting, doesn't it? Well, after restraining myself from prop collecting most of the summer, I broke my fast by hitting several Whidbey thrift shops in one afternoon. Oh, and I love what I found! :)

Another still life based on what I saw at the Alexander Zimin workshop.

  I was pretty fascinated by the way he set up a still life. No one was allowed to watch. I'm assuming because he didn't want any distractions. Never had I thought to put that much focus into setting up a still life. Also, not being able to watch only made me want to watch all the more......

I have heard how tough it is to paint white objects. Really? It can't be that bad, I thought. Oh, yes it can! These double tulips really gave me a run for the money.

Still thinking about Alexander Zimin's workshop. Of particular interest is how he arranged his still life and how he lit both the still life and his canvas with only natural light. I'm also trying really hard not to crop in so close. Not sure how successful I was with all of that. Natural light is so cool (a little too cool for me) and the fact that my walls are painted green doesn't help. Hmmm, we'll keep trying....

My little photo safari to the Anitque Rose Farm in Snohomish last fall

was very productive. Here is yet another painting based on one of those photos.

I plan to return to the farm tomorrow and replenish my photo stock as well as

hopefully paint plein air.

It's not summer without a painting of Adirondack chairs. These two happen to be in Melissa's front yard. They've caught my eye more than once. One summer evening, I couldn't say no any longer. So here they are, loosely painted.

One thing I dearly love about the painting a day process is

there is no time to dwell on failures. I thought I had a handle

on this teacup bouquet business then I painted a couple of

real flops. Rather than become totally discouraged I just keep on

painting and sooner or later something turns out right. :)

 

Here we have deep purple rhododendron, dogwood flowers, pansies

and a lime hidden in there somewhere.

I bought some exquisite tulips at Central Market a few days ago.

I'd never really thought about the quality of cut tulips before.

These beauties were definitely the top of the line.

I know where I'm purchasing my cut flowers from now on.

Another one of the cool antiques I borrowed from Renee. Copper

or brass, I'm not exactly sure which it is. Renee could probably enlighten me.

That pear has been an absolute workhorse. It's my star model at the

moment. I wish I remembered what variety it was.

Pears

What is it about pears? I think if you looked at the top most

painted fruit, pears would probably be number one. I love paintings

of pairs. I own a beautiful painting of a golden pair by local artist Nikki Wheeler.

Pears are very anthropomorphic.  This, I believe, is the reason for their

universal appeal. Who do these pears remind you of?

Here is another scanned watercolor. The image is a

little fuzzy and the blues are much more intense. If you

can get it to work, scanning is definitely the way to go.

Watercolor with Mussel Shells

I have the great good fortune to study watercolor with

master watercolorist Elizabeth Kincaid. If you haven't seen

Elizabeth's work you're missing out. Click here for her website.

 

This painting was started in class last week. I'm accustomed to

taking a good 40 to 50 hours to complete a watercolor. So this

painting-a-day in watercolor is very new to me. There's a lot

of grumbling and stomping around the house right now

while I figure this out. Oh, you can throw some serious

pouting in there too. My poor family.

Grape Study

I have to say this is the first time I have made an effort to

really study how light effects grapes. I can now see

why they are painted so often. They are fascinating

to look closely at. The normal rules of shading don't apply here,

I'm guessing due to their transparency. Grab a grape the

next chance you get. Notice which part is lighter and which part darker.

Which part is a warm green and which part is a cool green.

It might surprise you.
