No. 711 Blue Vase with Tulips

Blue Vase with Tulips
Oil on Linen Panel
7" x 5"

This was my first attempt painting tulips using the methods I learned in the Dennis Perrin workshop. At first I was disappointed, feeling it had turned out too dark and heavy. Since then, though, it has grown on me and I've decided I like it after all. :)

No. 710 Tulips and Lemons

Tulips and Lemons
Oil on Linen Panel
7" x 5"

Many of the artists I admire paint their still lifes under a cool light or light from a north facing window (also considered a cool light). I normally paint with a Chromolux bulb which has a bit of a pink cast to it instead of the blueish cast a cool bulb has. So with these wonderful artists in mind I've been trying to paint under cool light. I really miss my Chromolux bulbs. :(
On an entirely separate note, I hear the tulips are out in Mt. Vernon....

No. 709 Tulips and Thread

Tulips and Thread
Oil on Linen Panel
7" x 5"

What do you do when you have two subjects you really want to paint but they don't necessarily seem to go together? You put them together anyway. :) Oh, it helps if the colors relate well.

No. 708 That Inner Glow

That Inner Glow
Oil on Linen Panel

Another one of my January rose studies. I was trying oh, so hard to capture that wonderful inner glow roses can have.

Tulip Demo #1
Oil on Linen Panel
7" x 5"

The theme for my February oil painting class was tulips. I kind of had forgotten how hard they can be to paint. Thanks guys for hanging in there! My awesome students rose to the challenge and created some wonderful paintings of this difficult subject.

I created a video of the process of making this painting for my class. If you are interested in seeing how this painting came together you can view it here:

No. 705 Sky Lit Hydrangeas and 1st place winner!!!

Sky Lit Hydrangeas
Oil on Linen Panel
8" x 10"

Dennis Perrin typically paints under a skylight with a northern exposure. The only place where I could find a similar situation was in my bathroom. You should've seen the look on my husbands face when he walked in on me painting hydrangeas in our bathroom (oh no! she's taken over ANOTHER room in the house!) It was a bit uncomfortable in there so I'm not sure I'll try it again. I did like the way the painting turned out.

On a much more exciting note, my painting Perrin Rose #3 won 1st place in Gallery North's Small Works show!! How supremely cool is that? A huge, huge thank you to the judge Robin Weiss and to Gallery North for this amazing honor.

No. 703 Paint-In Model

Paint - In Model
Oil on Gessobord
6" x 6"

This little piece was painted from a live model at the PAWA paint-in last fall. Apart from a great profile this model also wore a terrific hat. We just had the early spring PAWA paint in a little over a week ago. If you are interested, I made a little video of the event...
