No. 717 Blocked In Tulips

Blocked In Tulips
Oil on Linen Panel
7" x 5"

This painting started as a demo on "blocking in the big shapes" for one of my classes. I've gotten pretty fond of this method which I learned in the Dennis Perrin workshop.

A few more photos from my new class/painting studio....

You can just barely see our studio mascots here, the crows Toulouse and Lautrec.

No. 440 Tulips with Silver Goblet

Tulips with Silver Goblet and Wooden Bowl
Oil on Linen Panel
5" x 7"

Sometimes you win, sometimes you loose. For the life of me I couldn't get a good photo of this painting. Which is really a shame because I'm pretty proud of that silver goblet. :)

The Dupen Lilacs
Oil on Canvas Panel
8" x 10"

I spotted this huge gorgeous lilac bush on a morning walk of my neighborhood a couple of weeks ago. Fortunately for me, they lived in the yard of some good friends. I didn't have to do much arm twisting to get permission to run home with a few clusters. Woo! Hoo!

Double Tulips in Silver
Oil on Linen Panel
7" x 5"

Daily Paintworks, the website I usually auction my paintings on, posts challenges to inspire artists. One recent challenge caught my eye. Brenda Ferguson (a favorite daily painter of mine) asked us to paint our bliss. Beautiful, beautiful flowers are my bliss. So with that in mind, I painted these lovely double tulips in a silver pot. If you would like to see some other challenges on Daily Paintworks click here.

No. 416 Petals Tipped in Purple

Petals Tipped in Purple
Oil on Gessobord
6" x 6"

$38 + $6 domestic shipping

Painting this rose was a surprisingly tricky thing. I think possibly because I had the time to study it and the more you study the more you see....

The shapes in this Fortuny fabric seemed a perfect compliment to this deep purple tulip.

Happy Easter everyone!

Day 198 Teacup Bouquet 5

Teacup Bouquet 5
Oil on Gessobord
5 x 7

One thing I dearly love about the painting a day process is
there is no time to dwell on failures. I thought I had a handle
on this teacup bouquet business then I painted a couple of
real flops. Rather than become totally discouraged I just keep on
painting and sooner or later something turns out right. :)

Here we have deep purple rhododendron, dogwood flowers, pansies
and a lime hidden in there somewhere.

Rhodies, and Snow Balls and Tulips. Oh my!
Oil on Gessobord

Again flowers from my yard except for the snow balls. Neighbor
to the rescue once again. Thanks Melissa!

Day 178 My Tulips!

My Tulips!
Oil on Gessobord
6 x 6

Finally! A chance to paint tulips from my own garden. I purchased
a bag of 50 tulips from Costco last fall. Few, that was a lot of bulbs
to plant. They were certainly worth the effort.

Day 147 - Another 8 x 10 for the Grill

Purple Tulips in Tall Glass Vase
8 x 10
Oil on Canvas Board

And another one to be displayed at the Grill in May and June.
I'm pretty happy with this one. More gorgeous tulips from
RoozenGaarde.

Day 144 Brass Pitcher Returns

Purple Tulips with Brass Pitcher
Oil on Canvas Board
5 x 7

A more simplified version of the tulips than I have been
painting. That brass pitcher is a pretty cool little piece. It needs
to model more often. I'd love to know its history.

Day 142 Tulips in Blue Vase

Tulips in Blue Vase

Tulips continue to fascinate me.
I especially like the ones with two sets of petals.

I finally found an arrangement of the full bouquet that I liked.
No hair pulling that day either!

Day 133 Tulip Angst

Teapot Lid
Oil on Gessobord
6 x 6

I couldn't resist one last trip to Central Market for a bunch of tulips.
I remember being so excited to get home and arrange them for a great still life.
Little did I know it would take me over an hour to figure out something
I was even remotely happy to work with. I was so frustrated that hair pulling
seemed like a good idea - my hair, my husband's, my daughter's, my dog,
anyone's would do. This is what I ended up with. You'll be happy to hear
everyone's hair is safe - for now.

Day 80

Cyclamens and Teapot
Oil on Canvas
5 x 7

Your first peak at my beloved teapot I found in an antique
store in Stanwood. I will paint it much larger next time. I spent
a good chunk of my childhood being dragged through antique stores
with my mom and dad. Until very recently, I avoided them at all
costs due to memories of intense boredom. Now with  my quest
for still life props, I see them with a whole new eye. How shocking!

A second note, why do cyclamen always look like they just woke up?
What a wild and crazy plant.

Day 79

Tulips with Green Vase
Oil on Canvas
5 x 7

I picked up an innocent little bunch of tulips at the grocery
store a few days ago. I've been wrestling with them
ever since. My first dilema was sorting out a composition
I liked. Then I had to figure out how to paint them!
This is my first attempt...
