No. 785 Sunny day with the Tulips 2

Sunny Day with the Tulips 2
Oil on Gessobord
6" x 6"

That beautiful day in the tulip fields, we were there ALL day. This was painted in the lovely evening light. The group that evening grew by two dedicated students coming up and painting after work.
Yes, that's dedication!

Connie and Carol arrive!

No. 783 Sunny Day with the Tulips

Sunny Day with the Tulips
Plein Air
Oil on Canvas Board
7" x 5"

We had one day, that I'm aware of, with sun from morning to dusk on the tulip fields and we were there to paint it. It was an amazing if exhausting day.

Friends Maggie, Diana and Karen out painting with me in the morning.

This lovely lady kindly let me take her photo.
The color of her saree was a perfect match with the tulips.

One painting down!

No. 780 Tulip Field Plein Air #1

Tulip Field Plein Air #1
Oil on Canvas Board
5" x 7"

I can not believe how soggy our weather has been this year. Last Monday we had a bit of a break so I grabbed willing students to go up and paint in the tulip fields. The color, as always, was mind blowing but the weather was definitely iffy. The wind was stiff, blowing poor Connie's pochade box over more than once. We persevered, however, until the rain started in the late afternoon.

Here's a link to some video I shot of the windy, tulip filled day with my GoPro:

No. 775 Morning in the Tulip Fields

Morning in the Tulip Fields
Oil on linen
5"x7"

This is what the tulip fields don't look like right now. In the last couple of years the tulips were early. This year, after a cold, wet, wet winter, they are behind. So this particular piece was painted from a photo I took. It was a class demo. We are still preparing ourselves for a plein air trip to the tulip fields. I think the tulips will be ready next week. We just have to cross fingers on both hands that the weather will be decent...

No. 773 Tulips in Red Pitcher

Red Pitcher
Oil on Canvas Board
7" x 5"

This is one of my favorite recent paintings. It's for sale at the Rexville Grange Art Show near the tulip fields in Mt. Vernon. The subject matter seemed appropriate. The show starts Friday. If you are headed up that way, I highly recommend a visit. There's some great stuff there and I'm already afraid any profit I might make will probably be spent at the show...

I drove by the tulip fields yesterday after setting up the show. Lots of daffodils in bloom but not much in the way of tulips yet. Here is a link to check out what is currently in bloom:

No.612 The Largest Plein Air Painting

Mt. Vernon Tulips
Oil on Stretched Canvas
11" x 14"

This is by far the largest plein air painting I've ever done. I had hoped to "wow" someone into taking it home from the tulip fields. Interestingly, I noticed that people were less likely to come close and talk to me while I was painting this than when I was painting the much smaller versions. My guess is with this size they were able to satisfy their curiosity from fifteen feet away. Whereas, they would have to come within "chatting range" to see the much smaller ones. Lesson learned. :)

You meet the nicest people and the best photographers in the tulips fields. Another photo of me by a kind passerby, Thu Pham. Terrific shot, Thu! Thank you!!!

Mt.Vernon Tulip Fields
Oil on Canvas Panel
9" x 12"

This painting was commissioned by an old co-worker friend. Thank you, Chuck, not only for the commission but you patience as I tinkered and tinkered with it. Woo hoo! It's finally finished!
