In class we had a whole month of painting irises in preparation for painting in Claudia's lovely garden. We were lucky enough to have the opportunity to paint there a couple of different days. Claudia's husband, Dan, works long and hard in their garden and it shows!

Oh my, flowers are popping up everywhere. Too many choices! I meant to paint

these irises several times but only got this one little painting in before they passed their prime.

Day 91

 

Copper Kettle - Round Two

Oil on Gessobord

My first attempt at painting the kettle didn't thrill me so I

thought I would try again. This time on gessobord instead of canvas.

Painting on gessobord really is a different experience than painting on

canvas. The surface is much less absorbent, so your paint

really slides around. It takes getting used to. The end result being, 

I liked my first painting better. Try, try again!

Day 62

Longing for Spring

Oil on Ampersand Gessobord

I really enjoyed painting these irises. I enjoyed painting

the crinkles in the paper sleeve and the glowing stems

all the way to their tips. The flowers were a little tough. There

was a lot going on so they were a bit difficult to simplify. Overall

though, I'm pretty happy with this painting!

Day 60

Single Iris

I headed down to Snohomish for the second day to take advantage

of this beautiful sunny but very cold weather we've been having and

do some plein air painting. For the second day I was surprised by the fog.

I need to find a webcam somewhere so I can check on this before I 

pack up and head out. Yesterday I was actually able to do a painting

 of the fog rising. Today is was as thick as pea soup. Ah well, better luck next time.

Here is another scanned watercolor. The image is a

little fuzzy and the blues are much more intense. If you

can get it to work, scanning is definitely the way to go.
