This was painted using a method Shelby Keefe prefers. It begins with an acrylic under-painting using colors complimentary to what will eventually be placed on top. The idea is to let little bits of the under color show through in the final painting. It makes for a pretty vibrant painting in the end. 

Coupeville Art Festival countdown starts - 6 days. That means six days to squeeze in a couple more paintings, fix old ones, varnish finished ones, make sure I have everything I need, update my website, prep drapery and table clothes and a few other things I'm forgetting at the moment. Time to start a to-do list!

I have to say if you want a fresh fruit prop that goes the distance you can beat apples. Pears, I've discovered, are another matter.

On one of my special trips to Trader Joes I discovered Meyer lemons. I'd heard about this special fruit but hadn't actually seen them and, oh my, what a lovely color they are.

Amy Scattergood, a Los Angeles Times staff writer, had this to say about the Meyer lemon, "If Cézanne had lived not in France but in Southern California, his still lifes would have overflowed with Meyer lemons. Plump, smooth-skinned, colored an unmistakable dark yellow -- canary yellow, the color of egg yolks or the sun at noon -- they're sweeter than other lemons, with an intoxicating aroma that has hints of honey and thyme."

Yes, that about sums it up.

 

By the way, can you believe this is my 600th post? I certainly can't!

This is the painting that inspired the larger version I posted a couple of days ago. Come to think of it that's the way it's supposed to work, right? You do a small study to find out if an idea is worth the time, energy and materials to create a large version. Well, what do you know. :)

You could say this painting is a combination of the paintings in the last two posts. I painted it a couple of weeks ago. The painting I completed today has much less paint and texture. Shucks, I'm disappointed to see how much I've regressed in my efforts to put more paint on the canvas in two weeks. I need to redo the Zimin workshop. Sigh.

Every since the Zimin workshop I've been feeling the urge to paint larger. This is a dangerous proposition as larger paintings are much more difficult for me to sell. I suspect the danger is part of the attraction. :)

Poor daffodils were forgotten in the tulip rush. I think tulips are the "bad boys" of the spring bulb world. They're bold, temperamental, here one day and gone the next. Whereas daffodils are the "nice guys". They're cheerful, dependable, return year after year and are often taken for granted. That's it. I'm planting more daffodils next fall. :)

Zimin Workshop Study #3

This lively, loose, colorful study is from the third day of the workshop. The weather was beautiful so we went outside to paint. I was really excited because I hope to paint still lifes in my own backyard and was very interested in how Mr. Zimin approached this situation. You can see some of his palette knife work on my painting. It was an interesting combination of scraping paint off to simply and unify while adding thick, variegated strokes for interest. I know one thing for sure. I need to use a lot more paint.

I almost forgot to post this painting. I painted about a month ago.

Elizabeth had given me some suggestions to improve the composition

but I hadn't gotten around to following her advise yet. However,

I'm very behind on photographing art. I photographed this

quite a while ago. So here it is! When I get around to applying

Elizabeth's recommendation I'll post the new version and see

what you think...
